Brief History:

ATEN was founded in 1969, and has been operating daily since then. There have been times when the net was very busy handling traffic. The net meets each day practicing the passing of formal written NTS Radiogram Traffic messages into and out of our coverage area. We have a great bunch of people that make up the Net.  We practice every day for that emergency which we hope never comes.

Recently, many stations have contacted us with their full support as to the ATEN format and Protocol. These include ARRL, NTS Area Chairs, Transcontinental Corps (TCC) Director, and many experienced traffic handlers in the NTS System.

Because of the protocols listed below, we are always looking for individuals interested in learning to be prepared for an emergency.  Come and join Arizona's most active traffic net.  A first class net serving the Public by serving our Families, our Communities and our Country.  Looking forward to hearing you on the net!

Net Meets

3986kHz at 7:00PM MST 0200Z Daily

All Amateur Stations are welcome.  If you have a Technician license, please check into the net at a General class or higher license station, and signify which station you are checking in from.  The net meets for drill and practice handling NTS Radiograms, and ARES ICS-213 messages.

How to become a Member

If you would like to be part of the Net as a member, please bring an originated radiogram to the ATEN Net and pass it to another station.

Once your message is passed on the ATEN Net, and you check into the net four times in a calendar month, and you advise the Net Manager of your intentions to join the membership of ATEN, you will be immediately placed on the member roll call list.

You can by-pass the four check-ins by originating 2 (two) radiograms in a calendar month and passing them on the net. Then advise the net Manager of your intentions of joining the membership of ATEN.

You will be immediately placed on the member roll call list.

We have training sessions most Fridays after net. On Hold for now. Also, most any member will be very happy to help you with your message of origination anytime.

ATEN Protocol

Since ATEN is a formal ARRL NTS Affiliate Arizona Section Traffic Net, and is organized to handle Written Radiograms:

All members are required to originate and bring to the net one Radiogram Message, and relay it to another Amateur Station on the ATEN Net, at least once in a calendar month, and check into the Net a minimum of four times in a calendar month, preferably once a week, and must be willing to take any legal Radiogram Traffic Messages for their area. This is the minimum effort necessary to remain on the member roll call list.  No Exceptions!!

All NTS Radiograms are like the US Mail, the content of the message is private and sacred. As long as the message is legal it must be relayed or delivered on this NET.

If you have failed in the above Protocol requirements, you can reinstate your ATEN Membership by originating one radiogram and relaying it on the ATEN Net, and check into the net four times as a visitor, then advise the Net Manager of your intention to re-join the net membership. You will be immediately added to the roll call.

Alternately, you may originate 2 (two) radiograms and pass them on the net in one calendar month instead of checking in 4 (four) times as a visitor. Advise the Net Manager of your intention to re-join the net membership.

NO early checks-ins on ATEN. This applies to any member or Visitor. If you have to leave early, check with the Net Control Station to see if any traffic is listed for your area. Our goal is to have stations available to take traffic for their area, not to just check in for the numbers.

If you must leave the net, contact the net control station and advise him or her.

Chatter, other than net information, should be avoided.

Materials you need with you at your check-in:  ARRL Numbered Radiograms, HX handling instructions, a blank Radiogram

These forms can be found on and printed from this website.  Also you need access to the NTS Manual found in Apendix B of the Public Service Communication Manual. Link below.
